The Huszars get donuts together every Friday.

One never knows when one will meet the love of one’s life. It could be at a coffee shop, or in a high school hallway, or perhaps they may bump into each other on the way to work. One may know the other person for years and years and then finally realize that that person is “the one.”

In fact, there are a few high school love stories here at UC High that you might believe came straight out of a Romcom. Married couple Math Teacher Phill Huszar and English Teacher Jennifer Huszar are blessed with the opportunity to work on the same campus.

Jennifer Huszar said, “We met at Standley Middle School. We taught there together for several years and were friends for a long time before we started dating. We finally started dating when he left Standley for a job at the district office, and then ultimately at UCHS. I followed him to UC a few years later when an English position opened up here.”

Both of them agree that the best part of working together is their shared experiences. Jennifer Huszar said that they share a lot of students and have shared friendships with other staff members. They also have a common understanding of each other’s job because they partake in the work experience daily. She also said, “It helps us be more empathetic and understanding.” Phil Huszar said, “We work in different departments so that is enough difference to make it interesting.”

During school hours, the busy couple see each other very little but are very appreciative of the time they do get to spend with one another. Jennifer Huszar said, “We usually drive to and from school together, but unless there is a staff meeting, that’s about it. I pop into his class from time to time to say “hi,” especially on Fridays when we get donuts!” Phil Huszar said, “Carpooling also saves gas money.”

There is another couple at UC High who met through work too. Another amazing love story on campus is Front Office Clerk Norma Smith and her husband Security Staff Gary Smith, who met when they both worked at the Inglewood Forum in Los Angeles.

Norma said that they started to hang out and as they were talking, Norma shared with Gary that she worked at UCLA during the day and they quickly realized that Norma and Gary’s mother worked in the same building. Norma said, “That was the coincidence that brought us together.”

Throughout the day, Gary makes the effort to go into the front office and see his wife. He said, “We see each other around six times a day at least. Once in the morning, once when I leave, numerous times throughout the day, and sometimes at lunch. I’ll go into the office and get some coffee or grab a drink from her refrigerator or go see if she has any food.”

Working alongside your significant other seems to come with many benefits. For Norma and Gary, they get to talk and see each other multiple times throughout the day. For Jennifer and Phil Huszar, they get to carpool whilst talking about their shared experiences. Valentines is just around the corner, so don’t forget to wish these these couples a happy day.
