UC High’s new ASB Roman Legion commission is working to bring the school together and support all sports and extracurriculars around campus. They lead and represent the student section at school events, something every Centurion can be part of.

“Roman Legion is the embodiment of all extracurriculars and activities at UC High, including sports, theater, band, color guard, and more,” said Commission Lead Senior Alani Sandoval. “We want to recognize as many people and clubs as possible,” said Commissioner Senior Ben Gavani.

ASB Advisor Samantha Cruz said, “Overall, we are hoping to have more involvement in everything UC. We are working on getting people to go to the shows for theater, having people at Academic League matches, Science Olympiad, and anything that is student-centered. We want to make sure that all groups are acknowledged and have fans.”

“We are working to bring the school together through representation, making people aware that these things exist on campus and making sure people are able to come to us and have their activities promoted,” said Commission Lead Senior Mateo Torres Chapa.

“Our goal this year is mainly to bring emphasis to everything that happens around campus. A lot of people don’t know about all the things going on at school, whether it be games, plays, or recitals for band and orchestra. That’s why our commission was created, so that we can include everybody,” said Commissioner Senior Corrie Dudley.

While Roman Legion represents everything UC High, there is a big emphasis on sports and having school spirit. They are currently focusing on the winter sports season, which includes basketball, soccer, wrestling, and girls water polo.

“We’re working on transitioning the football game student section to basketball for the winter season, going to all winter sports senior nights and pushing those out to the school,” said Sandoval.

“To bring the school together, we’re working on spreading information as efficiently as possible in the most appealing way,” said Gavani, who is in charge of making all graphics for the Roman Legion Instagram (@uchsromanlegion), updating students on the many activities happening around the school .

“The Roman Legion Report [a daily video promoting all games and events happening around campus] is something that’s really helpful. Our boost in media and overall communication has really improved this year,” said Cruz.

The commission has many more exciting projects in store to support school events. Torres Chapa said, “We’re planning on doing sports videos throughout the winter season, having media coverage for teams, and interviewing players and asking them about their sports. We will also be having games of the week like basketball games, having a packed student section and sponsoring cool events.” Cruz said, “The commission is working on getting a good turnout for all basketball games at home, having themed games and hopefully more giveaways.”

“We want to make sure people feel acknowledged in their sports because there are a lot of sports that may have limited attendance to their games or feel that they don’t have many fans. We’re trying to change that this year and have support from everyone to make a more spirited school,” said Torres Chapa.

Sandoval said, “Supporting the school creates a positive community and brings us together as one Centurion.” Torres Chapa added, “Spirit builds community, and it’s easier for us to have a good time if there are more people having a good time. It helps our athletes and performers feel acknowledged and feel cared for.”

UC High’s student section was just ranked in the top 20 in San Diego. Dudley said, “Finding out that we were in the top 20 student sections was absolutely surreal. This year has been so great and the spirit during games has been super awesome, so it wasn’t really a surprise. But finding out that we were in a category with some of the best in California was a big surprise.” But they couldn’t have done it alone, “It wasn’t just the Roman Legion Commission, but it took the entirety of ASB and the UC Community to show up and show out and make our student section what it is today,” added Dudley.

Roman Legion encourages students to continue their support at school events. Gavani said, “You only experience high school once, so why let it go to waste.” Cruz agreed, adding that, “You don’t want to regret not being involved in one capacity or another. So don’t waste your time, because once it’s over, that’s it.”
