“The one thing that sets us apart from other sports, is that anyone can wrestle. All you need is heart and a good attitude,” said Head Coach Eddie Hernandez.

The UC High Wrestling Team is in search of a Western League title after coming off a season of both rebuilding and transition.

Last season, the Wrestling Team gained  much experience as well as many first-year wrestlers. Captain James Kegler said, “I thought we might have had a few problems last year, but with hard work, we still had a good season.” Senior Kasra Mirzabeigifini said, “Last season, we had a lot of first-year wrestlers, and we were in a process of transition and rebuilding. I definitely think we learned a lot of lessons last season.”

The biggest goal for the team seems to be capturing yet another league title. “Our biggest goal is to win league as well as get as many people as we can into the Masters Tournament,” said Captain Alex Newman. “Winning league, and getting as many ninth and tenth graders to join, are big goals for us as a team,” said Mirzabeigifini.

One ideal that is being pushed upon the wrestlers is teamwork and getting to know each other so that they can win league. Hernandez said, “I want to see improvement. Our goal is always to win league, but I just want us to grow and I want to see everyone have fun.”

Some of the wrestlers believe the team can accomplish many things this upcoming season. Newman said, “I think the upperclassmen have a very good chance of going to Masters this season.” Kegler added, “I think our team will do very well and not only win league, but also place top three in the CIF dual meets.”

Mirzabeigifini said, “Personally, my goal is to come in top five at CIF.” Some of the wrestlers have voiced their own personal goals for this upcoming season. “While I want all seven starters to make it to Masters, I personally want to make it to the state championships,” Mirzabeigifini said.

While the Wrestling Team will be going up against multiple opponents this year, the biggest challenge looks to be Madison High. “Our biggest rival is definitely Madison [High]. Last year, they were the only team that beat us, and we really want to get them back this season,” said Mirzabeigifini.

To prepare for the new season, the Wrestling Team has begun training. “The team has been working out two days a week to get in shape. This includes running and lifting weights,” said Kegler.
