Chlorine has never smelled so sweet. UC High’s Girls Varsity Swim Team went undefeated this spring season and have an exciting CIF run to come.
Varsity Coach Amanda Weinbrecht has been coaching the team for three years now, the first year as an Assistant Varsity Coach. Her coaching skills seem to have had a positive impact on the team, according to Team Captain Junior Kinyee Fong: “We won League undefeated last year when Amanda became our coach. I feel like in the last two years the spirit of Swim Team has grown and swimmers on the team have had more drive due to Amanda’s skills in coaching.”
According to Weinbrecht, Swim Team practices consist of both girls and boys varsity members swimming together. “I think it works great that way because the girls want to beat the boys and the boys cannot let that happen,” she commented. The team also held dryland practices 2-3 times a week, in which swimmers would engage in abdominal exercises, running, and sometimes even playing soccer in an attempt to “mix it up a bit.”
Team Captain Senior Dayna Latney has been on Girls Varsity since her freshman year. She has particularly liked this year on the team not only because she has been captain, but also because “…everyone has been committed to the season.” Latney was happy with the newest members of the team as well: “We had quite a few freshmen make the team this season and they have all been doing great.”
Weinbrecht took notice to the new members as well. She felt this season stood out from others due to a larger amount of freshmen who wanted to make the Varsity Team. “Usually, freshmen try out for junior varsity due to being new, not knowing what to expect, and maybe doubting themselves, thinking they might not be good enough. The amount of enthusiasm these girls have this year is great,” Weinbrecht remarked.
Sophomore and Varsity Member Haley Tweedie is sad to see the season come to an end, but she has a reason to keep her head up. “Our Varsity Girls team killed it this year, with the help of the new incoming freshmen and the new additions that got moved up from junior varsity. I think that if we keep doing what we are doing and put an even greater effort into City’s and CIF. We could all do very well.”
