Four of UC High’s Drama Club students will be directing this year’s spring production “It’s All An Act!”, which will be taking place in UC High’s auditorium March 20-23.
The four students directing the spring production this year are Seniors Nia Hilton, Emily Culp, Itzel Velasco and Thomas Naylor. Each will direct a mini-play. Hilton is directing Words, Words, Words, written by David Ives, and is excited for the opportunity and about the outcome of the show. “There are going to be 15 actresses and six actors in the plays. All four plays are one-act, which means that they are much shorter than usual, allowing us to show the plays all together each night,” Hilton explained. “We’re working really hard on it, so we’re hoping that everyone will come see it!” she added.
Culp, who is directing Phillip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread, also by David Ives, explained the basis of the show and how its title came about. “We named the play ‘It’s All an Act!’ because we were all brainstorming and we thought that it was a fun pun,” said Culp. “This is a variety show made up of four wacky, fun, comedic plays.”
Naylor, is also directing one of David Ives’s works, Universal, while Velasco will direct Potman Spoke Sooth, written by David Fulk.
Drama teacher Belinda Brown is letting the four seniors take over the spring production so they get a feel for what it is like to direct a play. Velasco said, “Being able to know what Ms. Brown has dealt with and seeing how different it is to be directing a play instead of acting or sitting in the audience watching the play is going to be different, but we’re all very excited and are looking forward to working with our actors and actresses to create a successful show.”
