UC High’s website has released a copy of the Student/Parent Handbook, filled with past policies and new ones that are highlighted in red in order for parents and students to easily find what policies have changed and/or been added.
One of the new policies falls under the category of dress codes. It states, “High shorts, skirts or dresses are not appropriate school attire if they expose portions of the body that are above the fingertips of a person. This means if a student holds his or her arms down at the sides, the length of the outfit shall fall below the hands and fingertips of the person.”
Provost Brian Compagnone believes that students should follow the dress code to make it easy for everyone. He said, “I don’t completely feel like playing fashion police, so let’s just be happy that it’s better than uniforms.”
Along with this new policy remain the original dress code rules; however, if a student were to violate any of the rules this newly enforced policy states that “students may be required to change into school-supplied clothing in the event that a parent is not available to bring other clothes to the school” (sandi.net).
Senior Erika Cubberly believes that school officials should be less focused on ones choice of clothing and more focused on student’s academic ability. She said, “If students aren’t doing anything wrong behaviorally or academic wise, then they shouldn’t be penalized for what they wear to school, unless it’s extremely inappropriate to the point where it’s distracting.”
