The celebration of Cinco de Mayo consists of dancing, music, and most importantly, delicious food (history.com).

Traditionally, many will eat tacos and drink margaritas; however, there are many different cuisine options to choose from. According to an article in Smithsonian Magazine, some of the most popular foods include: mole poblano, chalupas and chiles en nogada. Mole Poblano is chicken served with a sauce made up of ground up ingredients. Chalupas are similar to tostadas. They’re fried tortillas topped with salsa, chicken, and occasionally cheese. Chiles en nogada are an iconic dish in Mexico. The pepper is dipped in egg batter, then fried, and finally topped with a rich walnut sauce (smithsonianmag.com). All of this sounds so delicious.

The most popular food on Cinco de Mayo is Mole Poblano, just because it is native to Puebla, the location where natives are reminded about the Mexican army defeating the French army. According to an article on the Delish cuisine website, Mole Poblano is thought to date back to around the seventeenth century. That’s 200 years before the Battle at Puebla! Margaritas are the more popular beverage of choice (delish.com).

“On Cinco de Mayo, my family and I usually spend time with each other. My mom usually makes a nice Mexican dinner, and we all just hang out and enjoy quality time together. Her dinner is usually Mexican rice, beans and some sort of taco. My favorite thing to eat on Cinco de Mayo are carne asada tacos. I really like to drink the virgin margaritas with dinner, too,” said Junior Jasmine Vazquez.

“Contrary to popular belief, Americans are not the only ones who really celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I enjoy eating tamales, burritos and Mexican candy on Cinco de Mayo, because it embraces the culture,” said Junior Adam Delin.

The food that revolves around Cinco de Mayo not only tastes good, it also embraces the Mexican culture on this day.
