As we experience more and more rainy days, one of the best past-times is watching movies. Some of the most common movies targeted towards teenagers are those that take place in high school. A few of the more recognizable high school based movies include The Breakfast Club, Clueless and Mean Girls.
Written and directed by Filmmaker John Hughes, The Breakfast Club has become one of the most iconic teen movies ever. According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), “When five high school students meet in detention, they realize they have a lot more in common than they had originally thought.” The 97-minute movie, released on February 15, 1985, gives insight to what detention was really like at Shermer High (imdb.com). This classic movie lets students live vicariously through the characters while teaching valuable life lessons.
Clueless, written and directed by Producer Amy Heckerling, was released in theaters on July 21, 1995. “My favorite high school-related movie was Clueless, because it was funny and clearly not an accurate representation of high school,” said Junior Victoria Bleu. “It is so overdramatic and an exaggerated version of some high school stereotypes we see today,” she continued. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Clueless revolves around “upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible” (rottentomatoes.com).
Mean Girls has become one of the most famous modern teen movies. Released on April 30, 2004, Mean Girls is one of the most popular movies of our generations. In the movie, three girls accept a new girl from Africa into their clique and experience a roller coaster of a friendship (imdb.com). Mean Girls exemplifies how social statuses can tear a school apart and show a person’s true colors.
The cuddle weather we are getting this El Nino season calls for a fun way to spend time indoors. Movie-watching is an activity that many teenagers do to occupy their indoor time, and high school movies are some of the most easy to relate to. If you’ve never seen The Breakfast Club, Clueless and/or Mean Girls, you are in for a treat, and if you have, they are definitely worthy of a repeat.
