Are you a Sith Lord or Jedi Master? Don’t worry, you still have a little bit of time to figure it out before the new Star Wars movie blasts into theaters today. Not much is known about the plot, except for that it is going to be a continuation of the original trilogy, set thirty years after Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) takes place (imdb.com).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is showing the power of its fan base this holiday season, as it has shot down box office sale records during pre-sale. Breaking the previous record of 1 million dollars in pre-sale, The Force Awakens pulled in a whopping 6.5 billion dollars (cnbc.com). “This is going to be huge. Especially with Disney buying Star Wars, it’s going to be that much bigger with them behind it,” explained Sophomore Jeremy Goldberg.

A fresh take on a timeless trilogy seems like just the ticket to revitalize what used to be a nerd/geek classic spanning generations. “Every generation has had its own set of  Star Wars movies, and it seems about time we get a new one,” said Senior Eric Fernandez.

Not everyone is ecstatic for the movie, however; some are worried about the revamp, especially with Hollywood’s new take on movies. Junior Josh Curé said, “The CGI is really nice, but I just hope they focus on the story. A lot of movies now are just action, but [Star Wars] is really story-based, so it’ll be bad if they take away from that.”

Bringing it into 2015, the film highlights more opportunities and diversity to the ever-expanding universe. The two main characters in the movie are a black man and a woman. “When I saw the trailer for it, I didn’t expect the clone [to be black], and it made me that much more excited,” said Senior Christoffer Lansang.

“I really hope Abrams delves back into [the extended universe] because there is so much he can do with it,” said Goldberg. “…as long as it’s better than the prequel trilogy, then I think something good will come out of it,” he added.

Not only are there loads of new human characters, the droids have a new poster baby, BB8. “BB8 is the cutest little robot ever,” said Fernandez. “We’ll probably be seeing a lot of comedic beeping and robot sass.”

Needless to say, the new Star Wars movie will be a force to be reckoned with this weekend and for months to come. It seems to have already won over many fans here at UC High.
