The UC High Boys Water Polo Team is already making waves just weeks into the season. With a mix of experienced players and new faces, the team is showing early signs of strong chemistry and determination to achieve their goals and make an impact.
Head Coach Jackson Ziegler said, “Our goal this season is to win League, beat Mission Bay High School at our senior night on October 30, and make a D2 playoff run.” Ziegler is looking forward to the season and is working hard to lead the team to success. There is a lot of excitement among the team regarding the possibility of advancing far in the playoffs and winning CIFs this season.
“My favorite part of coaching is working with student-athletes. I get to watch them grow, learn, have fun, and there is nothing more fulfilling than that,” said Ziegler. His passion for mentoring young athletes is evident in the team’s early progress, as his guidance and enthusiasm set the tone for the season ahead.
Senior Captain Evan Turley, who has been playing water polo for a couple of years now, said that water polo is his favorite sport. “My favorite aspects of water polo are the friends I’ve made on the team and the satisfaction that comes from pushing myself physically. I love the competition and challenge, and after every practice and game, I leave feeling exhausted but happy,” said Turley. He enjoys playing water polo for the game itself and the memories he makes on the team.
Turley said, “My favorite memory from my time playing for UC was placing second in CIFs. That achievement came at the end of a long season and was due to a lot of hard work from the team. It was a great moment.”
Junior Noah Malabry shared how the team welcomes everyone, no matter their skill level. “It’s a friendly environment, and it’s open. No experience is required to play, and we will teach you everything you need to know,” said Malabry. This open approach, combined with the team’s determination, fosters an environment where athletes can grow their skills and confidence throughout the season.
“The most challenging aspect of water polo is definitely the pressure of a game, where you can have a plan and then it just all goes away once you have the ball in your hand,” said Malabry. Moments like that are what can make water polo both challenging and exciting, according to Malabry.
It will not just be about competition for this UC High Boys Water Polo Team; it will also be about making this season one to remember. With their goals set and focus locked in, the Boys Water Polo Team is prepared to make its mark this season.
