As the sun beats down and sand flies across the court, UC High’s Boys Beach Volleyball Team is diving into an exciting new season. With quick reflexes, strong chemistry, and determination, the team brings plenty of competition to the beach. From varsity’s first seed to the JV athletes, every member of the team is working hard to represent UC High’s team with pride and make this season one to remember.
For many, playing beach volleyball is about more than just winning games, it’s about representing UC High with pride. “Being first seed on the team is a huge honor. It means that I get to represent my school at the top level while also being someone who is looked up to by younger guys on the team,” said Senior Jacob Brantuas.
Still, the team emphasizes that no seed is more important than another. “At the end of the day, me winning my game as the first seed is just as important as the fifth seed winning their game,” said Senior Jonan Merle.
The coaching staff also sees promise in this year’s lineup. “The Boys Beach Volleyball Team is a good mix of veteran and new players. We have a core group of seniors and juniors that were some of the best players from last year, when we went as far as the semi-finals in the Open Division,” said Coach Mark Salata.
Mentorship is also an important part of the program. Younger players look up to the older varsity players. “I look up to Jake Goforth or Jacob Brantuas, because they keep a level head and always play at their hardest,” said Junior Malcom Solt. Beyond mentorship, the team has goals they strive to achieve. “Each year, the goals include everybody improving their skills to improve as a team weekly and peak during the playoffs. This year, I would like to see greater flexibility of who the players pair with and we are raising our skills to have more offensive options,” said Salata.
On the court, communication is everything, as the athletes rely on it to consistently stay sharp. “We make sure to talk during every point, whether it’s to critique each other or just simple communication like blocking or hitting calls,” said Brantuas. This teamwork and communication has led to unforgettable moments, like last season when two UC players pulled a stunning victory. “My favorite moment while being a part of the program was when my partner and I beat a Hawaii commit during one of our League games,” said Brantuas.
Each player brings their own skills to the sand. “I think something that sets me apart is my athleticism and understanding of the game. Although I’m not the tallest, I’m still able to get a block up and be very strategic with my shots,” said Brantuas. Others on the team are focused on their goals and improving their skills. “A skill that I am improving on this year is my sets, because I’m not too good at setting,” said Heyer. “A personal goal that I have is to make it to the top five by the end of the season,” said Solt.
Anyone who is interested should give Boys Beach Volleyball a try. “I think that if you’re thinking of doing beach volleyball, you definitely should. It’s one of the most fun games you can play and one of the healthiest things you can do for your body. Also, everyone in the volleyball community is really nice and funny,” said Solt.
So far, that hard work has already shown in results. “We are only about two weeks into playing, and we have more power than last year’s team. Also, our players are hungry to learn and get better, but are balanced with more patience. They know it takes time and they trust the process,” said Salata.
