The Gender Sexuality Alliance Club provides a safe space and supportive community for UC High’s LGBTQIA+ students to discuss issues revolving around sexual orientation and gender identity.
Club Co-President Senior Miles Reinstein shared about joining the program in his sophomore year. “I joined GSA because I was unsure about my identity. I was very interested in the club, and when I would see the club president at the time, I realized that I wanted to be at that level one day. The next year, I became treasurer, and then president,” said Reinstein.
Reinstein shared activities the club takes part in. He said, “Usually in our meetings we discuss LGBTQIA+ holidays and we have presentations, so we are definitely going to talk about what different events to start doing next. We are planning another trip to Standley [Middle School] where we talk to their GSA Club, and in the past, we have written letters to transitioning youth. The letters were about being supportive during their transitioning and to really help them with spreading positivity.”
Sophomore Patrick Richardson said, “I just joined GSA about two months ago, and I have been really enjoying the club. I made many new friends along the way, and it’s a good club to feel comfortable in. It provides a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community, where others can share and be comfortable. I especially like going to the meetings because of how well the club president puts together presentations for us. The presentations usually are about celebrity icons who are in the LGBTQIA+ community, and we get to discuss that among us.”
Richardson said, “I think that others should join GSA, if they’re comfortable joining. Especially with how nice everyone is in the club, and how respectful everyone is with boundaries.”
Freshman Elo Glolynskiy, said, “Since the start of the year, I have been really liking GSA, and how the atmosphere around the club is nice. Something that I really enjoyed doing was writing the letters for the Standley students a couple of months ago.”
