We have people who are really committed and train all the time.

The UC High Track and Field Team is ready to compete this spring against some of the top competitors in the county.

Senior Hayden Trotter said, “I think we will do pretty well. We have a fast team. Especially the long distance runners, they will definitely be running strong this year.”

The team has several runners that were a part of this years UC High Cross Country Team, and they have been training throughout the winter. “We have people who are really committed and train all the time,” said Senior Renee Torre. “I’ve been training really hard, so I think I am going to do well this year,” she added.

Torre said, “I prefer track over cross country. Its flat and fast paced, and I get to wear spikes.”

Many of the athletes are confident in the long distance runners competing in the 1600 Meter, and the 3200 Meter. “We have a lot of strong distance runners, so we stack those events,” said  Senior Elise Boisvert. “I like them, because they are distances that are long enough for me to challenge myself,” she added. Boisvert is currently injured, but she plans on returning as soon as possible.

Track and Field does not just host running events. It involves many different field competitions. Junior Casey Granfors said, “I like long jump, because I have a good jumping ability.” He added, “My goal for my next meet is to get 21 and a half  feet in long jump.”

Shot putters and discus throwers are also prepared and ready to compete. According to Junior Jillian Coronado, “I like discus because there is movement to it.”

Senior Juan Leyva said, “I like competing because it gives me motivation to better myself.”

The captains of the Track Team hold many responsibilities. While track athletes compete on a more individual scale, the captains still need to give tips and help others improve their techniques. “I am one of three captains for the girl’s team, and it’s nice because it holds me accountable for my actions. People are always looking up to me, and they watch what I do,” said Boisvert. “It’s also nice, because I get to interact with everybody,” she added.

Trotter, who is also a captain, enjoys his responsibility. Trotter said, “I get to show everyone proper form and help improve their technique.”

While the UC High Track Team is feeling confident and prepared for all competitions, they still have some work to do.

Competitive Track Teams such as Cathedral Catholic High are still going to be striving to win medals. Trotter explained, “They [Cathedral Catholic High] are going to be our biggest competitor, because they are a good overall team. They are good in every event.”
