This was the Patriots twelfth appearance in the Super Bowl, and while it was only the fourth time for the Seahawks, they still had an epic win against the New England Patriots. According to an article about the history of the NFL, “In 1960, a group of businessmen who wanted to own football franchises but were denied by the NFL, launched an alternative league, known as the American Football League (AFL).” The two Leagues were once rivals, but then decided to merge their Leagues in 1970, creating the NFL. They then held the first Super Bowl on January 15, 1967 originally calling it the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game” (history.com).
The NFL is divided into two groups, the National Football Conference (NFC) and American Football Conference (AFC). This created the Super Bowl that is widely known and appreciated today.
Not everyone can appreciate the sport of football and many just tune in to see the spectacular halftime shows and the multimillion dollar advertisements during the Super Bowl. According to USA Today, “Often referred to as the world’s biggest stage, the Super Bowl halftime show can draw upwards of 100 million viewers” (usatoday.com).
Bad Bunny’s halftime show was very anticipated and featured Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, among others. Green Day also performed a pre-game show. It included lots of themes and messages, including symbolism and represented his Puerto Rican roots. Football Captain Junior Tucker Wojdowski said, “I thought that the symbolism in Bad Bunny’s performance was really interesting.”
“For brands and marketers, the big game offers an advertising juggernaut, a time when companies pour millions of dollars into crafting a commercial spot that will linger long after its 30 seconds of TV airtime have passed” (history.com). These companies create incredibly expensive commercials to play during the Super Bowl. They spend so much money on it because of the huge audience they have access to.
Due to the controversy of Bad Bunny performing the entire show in Spanish, this year’s Super Bowl is one to remember. Whether you loved it or hated it, it will go down in history.
