A key player across multiple sports, Senior Captain Senior Joshua Dixon is described as “the nicest guy on any field,” making incredible catches on the football field in the winter and running and jumping over the competition on the track in the spring, while maintaining a strong and healthy mindset.
Dixon has been an athlete his whole life, exploring many different sports throughout his youth. He’s excelled at many sports, while being an outstanding teammate. “I’ve been playing football since I was five years old. I love it so much because of how competitive it is and the rush of scoring a touchdown,” said Dixon.
During his senior year, Dixon gained the captain role for the football team for his outstanding job as a teammate on and off the field. Confidently motivating his teammates on and off the field and catching touchdowns as receiver and making blocks as a defensive back,
Dixon’s love for football comes from many years of playing. The game has a deep meaning to him and that’s what drives him to push himself and his teammates, Dixon said, “Football means everything to me. It’s my whole world and what everything revolves around for me when it’s that time of the year.”
Senior Football Player Julian Cota, who has been friends with Dixon for many years said, “Josh is very kind and supportive. He was always very hard-working and a good person to be around because he was always respectful to the players and the coaches. When it came down to being serious, he would lock in and put others above himself while striving for greatness.”
Head Football Coach Paul Lawrence said, “Josh leads in his own way. The best attribute Josh has is being able to lift up his teammates. He was never one to point the finger; he was always someone to lift them up rather than putting them down.”
Lawrence added, “At our Thursday night dinner, he was our hype man, and also before and after games. When he talked, everybody would listen because everybody respected him. That doesn’t even count for how good of an athlete he was on the field. He was up for two-way player of the year for excelling in more than one position for the PPR [Prep Pigskin Report] by playing on the defensive and offensive sides of the field.”
However, as much as Dixon excels on the football field, he does the same on the track field, participating in the sport since seventh grade . Dixon started to do track out of the need to do something to stay active and get faster for football.
“I love track because of all the events and the new teammates I get to meet because of it,” said Dixon. Senior Nathan Lien, a teammate of Dixon on the Track and Field Team, said, “He is a super hard worker and a very likable guy. He’s always making jokes and making us laugh. Towards the end of our workouts when we’re all dying, he tells us to keep going and to push as well as always putting in all his effort.”
Head Track Coach John Hutsel said, “Josh is really positive and helps motivate the other athletes as well as being a great athlete. He does four events, the 4×100 meter relay, 100 meter dash, high jump and the triple jump. He does the maximum events he can at every track meet.”
Dixon had a broken leg towards the end of the football season this year, but continued to give it his all every time. Hutsel said, “When he broke his leg, most athletes would have said they were done with the year, but he had to be patient and let it happen. He still wasn’t a hundred percent, but he still fought that injury and it shows the real athlete he is by overcoming an injury like that and still coming out and doing what he does best.”
