Towards the end of every school year, the Senior Class plans a prank to signify the end of their final year of high school. The senior prank is an important part of the seniors’ high school experience and planning it is an adventure on its own.
According to Seniors Dannah Shinta, Elena Griffith, and Jenifer Castaneda, the senior prank is a special tradition that is an expressive opportunity for the seniors at UC High. Shinta said, “It’s a tradition for us to let out everything we have been wanting to say for the past year.”
Senior Kyle Smith said, “I would say there are certain aspects of fun in creating a prank, but it can easily turn into a hazard. There has been a history of bad pranks.” Smith mentioned that one year the seniors filled a hallway with water balloons which ultimately flooded the hallway, so the students in the school had to walk to their classes in a flooded hallway.
Smith said, “It is important to consider how to avoid going overboard, but to still have a good time. [It is important] to not do so much that it is going to be detrimental to the custodial team.”
According to Shinta, Griffith, and Castaneda, there are a few major aspects to keep in mind when planning the senior prank, aspects such as communication, coordination, execution, and money management. It is important that the students have enough combined funds to make the prank fun and interesting.
Griffith, Castaneda, and Shinta added that coordination is an additional important factor when it comes to planning the Senior Class prank. In order to make sure the prank is executed correctly and as smoothly as possible, communication is key among the seniors involved in the prank.
Senior Jayden Parker said, “We have to consider who will get thrown under the bus.” He explained that it is important to consider who will be affected by the prank whether it be the teachers, students, or custodial staff.
Senior Giovanna Brunetto said, “There should be some danger in the senior prank and it should be more exciting.” She explained that while the consequences should be considered, the most important part is that the seniors have a good time planning it, and enjoy the thrill of a prank. It is their final goodbye to the school.
According to Smith, the seniors all have a pact, keeping them all from telling anyone else what the prank is. It is detrimental to the execution of the prank if the whole school knows; the teachers or authorities might try to stop them from going through with the prank.
As with every year, students eagerly await to see what this year’s class will do.
