Next year, UC High is gaining a new ASB Co-Advisor to work with Computer Science Teacher David West, and that person will be our very own Marine Science and Chemistry Teacher Johnathan Ricks.
Current ASB Advisor West said, “Mr. Ricks will bring energy, enthusiasm, and excellent problem solving skills to ASB. He has over eight years of outdoor education experience, which hopefully will bring some fun, fresh air to the class. ASB demands energy, and Mr. Ricks has brought it since his first day at UC High.”
Ricks said, “I really love the push of bringing students together and developing community within the school. I wanted to get more involved with the student body and try something new other than just science.”
Physics and Chemistry Teacher Scott Estrada explained that Ricks is the perfect fit for this role, because he has a lot of energy and since he is new to the school, he may bring new and different ideas to UC High and its ASB program.
Ricks said, “I think having a fresh set of eyes will help the process. I think my high energy and enthusiasm will bring new ideas for ASB.”
Ricks explained that he wants to help students learn how to be comfortable in their own skins and come out of their shells. “Students these days are always focusing on what others will think of them to avoid being ‘cringe,’” said Ricks.
West said, “I’m stoked to work with someone that has as much spunk and pizzaz as Mr. Ricks. This summer, we will identify our strengths and weaknesses to determine how to split up duties, to best serve our students.”
“I think one difference I’ll bring is to focus on making events that the entire school will be interested in attending. I want to support ASB students in developing their own ideas and leadership skills, not just executing plans,” said Ricks.
Ricks added, “I really enjoy building a strong sense of community in the classroom, and ASB is all about creating that. My background in teaching and the outdoors has helped me learn how to organize engaging activities and create inclusive spaces. I value student voice and am excited to work alongside students to bring their ideas to life rather than just delegating from the sidelines.”
West said, “Going into my second year as an ASB advisor, I know ASB will have a better sense of self-direction. We’ll plan earlier, communicate in a multitude of ways, and continue to try to listen to the needs and wants of our UC High campus body. As for specifics, we hope to bring live music to UC High, in addition to our regular activities of dances, pep rallies, and special events. The student store menu should be beefed up also, offering heartier and more flavorful selections.”
“I think ASB next year is going to be energetic, creative, and very student-driven. I’m hoping we continue strong traditions but also try new ideas that reflect what students actually want to see at school,” said Ricks.
“There is always room to improve. In looking ahead to next year, we are seeking to recruit students who show high initiative, are excellent communicators, and who want to serve our campus before themselves,” said West.
