If you didn’t know, balancing being a security guard and track coach can be challenging. At UC High, Coach Mark McPherson is an extremely productive staff member. As a child, McPherson dreamed of being a forest ranger; however, he has instead become a positive role model and trustworthy staff member at UC High.
He describes himself as a direct, empathetic, and extroverted person. McPherson said one of his favorite things about being a security guard is being appreciative of the relationships that he has with different kids, providing guidance, hearing about their days, hearing them talk about their futures, and seeing them smile. He said he also loves working with his athletes, as he is a throwing coach for track and field. McPherson explained that his end goal and main focus is to keep everyone safe, which he has been doing at UC High for seven years.
There are many students at UC High that express their admiration for McPherson and his personality. Freshman Johanna Castaneda Manzano said, “I’d describe Mark as funny, serious, and kind, all in one…. Knowing that he is here on campus makes me feel safe, because of how serious he takes his job.” McPherson is one of her favorite people at UC High because of his compassion and supportive spirit.
According to Unified Security, being a school security guard goes deeper than just safety. “Kind security personnel foster trust, making students feel more comfortable approaching them with concerns. This supportive presence, rather than a purely punitive one, contributes to a more positive school climate.” It is good to build trust which encourages students to report any concerns (unifiedsecurtity.com).
Balancing being strict on protocols while also being a friendly face to students is McPherson’s goal. He said, “I think it is possible to be a mentor while also being stern, but do it in a way where students can understand that it is not personal but that it is solely for their protection. If they realize that it is not personal, then they will realize that we are keeping them safe while on campus. Even when a student does something that they should not be doing, I tell them that everything I do is to look after and protect everyone.” McPherson makes it clear that the students should be making good choices in order for the days to go smoothly as well.
School security guards often have a daily routine. McPherson said, “I say goodmorning at least sixty times a day to the kids that I see enter the school. I think it’s important to see kids smile and know that they’re welcome here everyday.” McPherson goes the extra mile to build trust with the students at UC High.
According to East Side Academy, friendly and approachable staff contribute to the comfort level of students, creating a supportive atmosphere where students can learn from their mistakes without fear or shame. “Being friendly and approachable makes teachers a ‘safe harbor,’ allowing students to make mistakes without fear of humiliation.” With students knowing there is someone looking out for them, they may be more welcoming of mistakes that come with life (eastsideacademy).
Junior Jennifer Lopez said that McPherson has been one of the most kind and trustworthy staff members to her since her freshman year. She explained, “I always talk to Mark when I need help with something. He’s always been the one I go to.” She said he keeps the campus safe because he is always “…keeping an eye out for everyone.”
School security guards are essential for creating a safe and nurturing environment. McPherson is recognized as a positive, accessible, attentive and kind leader on campus. He pays attention to every student, ensuring safety and a sense of comfort throughout UC High.
