Zodiac signs are 12 classifications in astrology that are determined by the sun’s position at the time of a person’s birth. Some people use them as a helpful resource to help them understand themselves better and give them guidance, while others believe that they’re not accurate, and there’s no real scientific evidence to back either up. No matter if you buy into them or not, zodiac signs have quickly become a cultural phenomenon, even though its history dates back thousands of years.
So where did they come from? Their origins are debated, and some form of astrology shows up in many ancient cultures, but zodiacs can be traced back to the Babylonians of Mesopotamia over 4000 years ago. According to National Geographic, the stars and planets were used to explain messages from the gods. The Babylonians created the 12 signs that we use in astrology today. Although, after the Greeks conquered Egypt, they added in their own mythology, naming those 12 signs and connecting them to specific dates based on the sun’s orbit (nationalgeographic.com).
Each zodiac sign comes with its own unique meaning. Starting with fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) the passionate and energetic group, these signs are driven by inspiration and adventure, destined to become performers and artists. According to an astrology website, Aries (March 21-April 19) are the “leaders” of the zodiac, often bold, courageous, and competitive, unafraid to throw themselves into challenges. Leos (July 23-August 22) are dramatic, loyal, and charismatic and are perfect for the spotlight, having the ability to stand out from the crowd. Sagittarians (November 22-December 21) are made to explore; these archers are optimistic, free-spirited and adaptable. They tend to always be seeking new experiences and relationships (costarastrology.com).
Next, come air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). Cosmopolitan Magazine says that they are the “communicators” of the zodiac and tend to be intelligent and have the ability to get along with everyone they meet. Geminis (May 21-June 20) are versatile, witty, and social. They are quick to adapt to the energy of a room. Libras (September 23-October 22) strive to create balance in all areas of life. They are known for being charming, diplomatic and genuine. Aquariuses (January 20-February 18) have a reputation for being unique, eccentric and innovative. They are not afraid to rebel against the norm (cosmopolitan.com).
According to the Today Show, water signs (Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio) feel their emotions very deeply, so they tend to be the most emotionally intelligent and are dreamers, healers, and nurturers. Cancers (June 21-July 22) are often described as the caretakers; they are highly empathetic, protective, and loyal and have a great ability to connect with others emotionally. Pisces (February 19-March 20) are dreamy, compassionate, and artistic, and they have an intuitive understanding of life. Scorpios (October 23-November 21) are known for their intense passion, mystery, and charisma; they know what they want and aren’t afraid to go after it (today.com).
Lastly, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are grounded and are the doers, creators, and organizers of the zodiac. Tauruses (April 20-May 20) are defined by patience, reliability, and persistence; they prioritize consistency in their life. Virgos (August 23-September 22) are the perfectionists of the zodiac, being hardworking, analytical, and focused. They excel at what they put their mind to. Capricorns (December 21-January 20) are people who are determined to overcome what stands in their way, due to their ambition, discipline, and responsibility (costarastrology.com).
Even if you’re skeptical about zodiac signs, it can still be fun to learn about your sign and see if there’s any truth to it. Senior Esmeralda Salceda said, “Even if they aren’t scientifically proven, I think people still believe in them because they are a way to learn more about yourself and feel more understood.” For a lot of people, astrology helps them self-reflect and gives them a new way to think about their personalities.
