Teachers shape more than just minds. They shape experiences, confidence, and the way students see themselves and the world. At the heart of truly impactful teaching is a deep sense of care and patience, and the ability to see the unique potential in every student. Art Teacher Delia Martin, this year’s Teacher of the Year, embodies all of these qualities with passion and grace.
Martin always makes an effort to connect with her students, no matter how they are feeling. She does this by closely observing her classroom and paying attention to the small details. This is also how she is able to navigate any challenges that may arise in her classroom. “By watching my students’ mood swings and remembering personal stories they share, noting a haircut or a new outfit, I build connections and a relationship with my students,” said Martin. Building these connections fosters a trusting, safe environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued.
Freshman Niv Eyal has Martin as her art teacher. She looks forward to going to Martin’s class every day. “She is a very caring teacher and she puts a lot of effort into everything we do in class,” said Eyal. A teacher’s care and dedication can make all the difference in how students experience learning, and Martin demonstrates both daily. Her consistent effort and genuine care are part of what makes her such an outstanding educator.
“Martin’s class has been one of my favorite classes all year. I enjoy all of the different types of activities we do in her class. Some of my other classes can be stressful at some points, but I am always able to relax and get my work for her class done and her class is just all-around really enjoyable,” said Eyal.
Martin tries her best to make sure her students are engaged and motivated throughout the school year. “I am a little intense and super passionate about art,” said Martin. Passion is a powerful tool in the classroom. It shows students that their teacher genuinely cares about the subject and creates an inspiring environment to learn in. When students see their teacher’s excitement, it often sparks curiosity and boosts their own interest. Martin’s enthusiasm brings a positive energy to the room that makes learning feel exciting rather than routine.
Martin has been teaching at UC High for 17 years now and her favorite subjects that she has taught throughout the years have been art and murals. Becoming a teacher takes a special type of person; one needs to be patient, caring, and creative. Martin said that it takes consistency and love to be a teacher. She is able to show all these characteristics to everyone who steps foot into her classroom.
“My inspiration comes from the need to give selfishly. I want to leave a mark that can continue to give,” said Martin. She has definitely made a difference at this school and will always be known as an exceptional teacher and a passionate artist.
Martin helps students build long-lasting skills that are valuable inside and outside of the classroom. “Ms. Martin taught me about good work ethic and how to learn and grow from previous mistakes. She also was always willing to help me when I needed it,” said Sophomore Sophia Dudley.
It is truly special to have a teacher like Martin in our community. She is an outstanding role model, is a dedicated teacher, and has a creative mind. Expressiveness and enthusiasm are key attributes as they make up an amazing educator, such as Teacher Delia Martin. Her ability to connect with students, inspire creativity, and bring joy into the classroom sets her apart. Martin’s passion for teaching and commitment to her students continue to leave a lasting impact, one that her pupils will carry with them far beyond the school walls.
