Creative Boo-It-Yourself Costumes

The wait is finally over! The spookiest month of all has arrived once again. October is full of fall festivities and autumn activities, but the most anticipated event is, of course, Halloween. One of the best aspects of Halloween is the costumes. Whether you are going out for a night of trick-or-treating or a night of partying, your costume is a key necessity to enjoying all the thrills Halloween has to offer. If you don’t feel like being a generic witch, ghost, or cat, there are plenty of DIY (do it yourself) costumes that will be sure to blow away the rest of your fellow ghouls and goblins.

For all of you going solo this year, if you are feeling extraterrestrial, an alien is a perfect and easy costume idea. Dig out the shiniest and most metallic clothes you own, and don’t be afraid to add in some extra glitter or gems. If you have longer hair, throw up those locks into some space buns and add some colored hairspray for an extra special effect. Adding bright-colored makeup will also help to really take your look out of this world.

Another great suggestion for anyone struggling to figure out what they are going to be for Halloween is to zombify any old costume or character. It is super easy to tear or rip up old clothes or costumes and add some fake blood to simply make the “living dead” version of something. Some examples include Disney Princesses like Belle, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, or superheroes like Captain America, Superman, or Wonderwoman. This will surely give off a deadly vibe anywhere you go.

For a group costume, a simple but smart idea would be to recreate or mimic another group, such as a band or a cast from a TV show. Some examples can include going as groups like The Spice Girls, KISS, The Scooby Doo Gang, or the cast from The Office. Getting the crew together and showing up in style would make a statement anywhere you go to celebrate the joys of Halloween night.

For all you lovebirds out there, couple costumes are always a hit. You can take any iconic duo or couple to recreate. Two great ideas could be Sully and Boo from Monster Inc. or Barbie and Ken. To achieve the Monsters Inc. look, one person can wear an oversized, pink shirt and put their hair in pigtails to emulate Boo. And for Sully, one could wear a blue and purple polka-dotted shirt with horns. For Barbie and Ken, wear an all pink preppy outfit to channel your inner valley girl. For Ken, wear a waspy but casual button down with a pair of khakis and loafers, slick your hair back and don’t forget the ascot.

Whether you’re planning to have a crazy night out with friends or a mellow stroll through your neighborhood to trick-or-treat, your costume will be sure to knock anyone’s socks off. Remember to pick a costume that you think represents yourself in the best light, and creep it real!
