Now that spring is in the air, it is time for America’s favorite pastime to begin at UC High: baseball. This year, Senior Shortstop Jacob Freedman is one of four captains for the UC High Varsity Baseball Team. Freedman started his baseball career when he was only four years old in UC Little League, and throughout the years, he has truly developed a love for the sport. He uses not only his talent and hardwork, but his respect for the game to motivate himself and others on the field.

“My favorite thing about my team this year is that we are all coming together and all have the same goal,” said Freedman. “The goal this season, for everyone on the Varsity Baseball Team, is to win as many games as possible, and hopefully that will lead to a league and CIF title.”

“My favorite part about playing a baseball game is winning and getting a dub with the boys,” said Freedman. “The games mean a lot to me, because I spend so much time practicing and preparing for the games. You have to sacrifice a lot in order to succeed, so when I do, it means a lot.”

Senior Tyler McKinney said, “He comes to the field wanting to get better than most and the effort he puts into baseball is just outstanding.” McKinney added that a lot of people look up to him.

Freedman has a lot of responsibility as one of the team captains, but he knows how to handle it well and takes good care of the team. “He is a good leader and gets everyone focused and keeps them in the game,” said McKinney.

Sophomore Liam Bailey added, “He is a great leader and his passion for the game makes me want to play harder.” The team agrees that Freedman is great leader and athlete.

Junior Christian Wood added that Freedman is a funny guy, a great leader, and knows how to manage the team well. He adds, “Freedman knows how to talk to us and give us good advice when we need it.”

Freedman’s favorite MLB team is the San Diego Padres. “I like the Padres, because they don’t win; so when they do win, I’m a loyal fan, and everyone needs to know that,” Freedman said with a chuckle. His favorite baseball player is Derek Jeter because he has won five World Series, and he was shortstop and captain for the New York Yankees. “He has game,” explained Freedman. “But I like playing baseball more than I like watching baseball, because even though I like to watch baseball, still, it kind of gives me anxiety because I’m not out there playing.”

All his time, effort, and dedication to the game has truly paid off. Freedman is excited to continue his baseball career at the University of La Verne in Los Angeles.
