Do you know how to “pin” someone in?  Wrestling is a popular sport here at UC High. This sport has been around for more than ten consecutive years and they plan to keep the program strong.

Wrestling is a simple sport of two that has one objective, to “pin” someone, or to put the opponent on his back. If neither opponent gets pinned, the player with the most points wins. There are five ways to win and they all are dependent on how you move and control the match.

Senior Hunter Phillips said, “We have won league for the past two years, and we want that again this year.” He added, “Last year, we beat St. Augustine to win league.”

Phillips said, “Last year, I qualified for State, but I lost and didn’t place. This year my goal is to make it to State again and actually place.”

Senior Sean Gonzalez said, “We practice everyday from right after school until 5pm. We start it off with sprints going on the ramp that goes to the upper field. After that, it’s half an hour of drilling takedowns and other movements, half an hour of live wrestling, and half an hour of conditioning with burnout sprints at the end.”

“We weigh ourselves before and after practice, and we lose about three pounds each time,” Gonzalez added.

Gonzalez explained, “Our coaches have been the same for the past three years: Coach Hernandez, Coach Degiso, and Coach Cabrera.” He added, “There have not been many changes other than the fact that our JV is bigger than it has been in a while.”

Gonzalez said, “Ultimately, I am aiming to place at the State Championships as well as the Western League Individual Champion at either 132 or 138 lbs. As for the team as a whole, we want to win league for the third year in a row.”

This year, UC  High  is competing in the Western League.
