The UC High Boys Tennis Team defeated Hilltop High, 16-2, and Sweetwater High, 15-3, during the pre-conference games without much difficulty. Senior Daniel Stigall, captain of the Boys Tennis Team, made the highlight of the match by acing his opponent with a hypersonic serve.
Because UC is placed within the highest division, its Boys Tennis Team has not been able to compete tenaciously with other schools. During the week before Spring Break, UC High lost to both La Jolla High and Coronado High with scores of 0-18. Boys Tennis Team Coach Carl Moon, said, “The teams placed in the upper division are just too unbelievably talented, making it nearly impossible for UC to bring home a win.”
Despite unfortunate defeats, the UC Boys Tennis Team consists of talented members. Singles number one player Stigall is quite experienced. He has been playing since the eighth grade, which is probably one of the reasons why he is the current captain. “Other than just being a senior, I’ve seen the team go through four very different years, and I know most of the people on the team well,” said Stigall. He hopes for commitment from each player to improve together as a team.
Moon, as a former player and coach, understands from experience and puts in effort to advise the team effectively. With experience from playing and coaching for over 10 years, Moon hopes to bring home pleasing results. The team is filled with students who want to learn and play tennis.
The players are supervised by Moon during sixth period and for a few hours after school. They rally with each other to increase their consistency, play sets with each other to gain experience, and do drills to improve reflexes.
