The UC High Schools Boys Golf Team has begun the spring sports season with an impressive 6-4 to start off their season. This team has high hopes to gain skills and improve with the help of Coaches Jay Larson and Kevin Surrey as the season progresses.
This team has been hard at work practicing at Stadium Driving Range and at their home golf course, Torrey Pines. “During practices we focus on our short game, etiquette, and other important aspects of the game,” said Junior Daniel Sherman.
Larson has many goals for the future of the Boys Golf Team, “We have some very good teams in league play. They are very deep. We are trying to get some of the less experienced players to shoot a little lower. This team is in the building mode right now and has many juniors, which means we should be much better next year,” said Larson.
This is Larson’s very first year of coaching the Boys Golf Team. “I heard about the position from Coach McCarthy of the track and cross country teams. He’s a longtime friend,” said Larson.
Although a newcomer to coaching at UCHS, Larson certainly does not lack the golfing experience necessary to be an influential golf coach. “I am a former professional. I went to the finals of the Champions Tour Qualifying Tournament in 2006. I also hold the world record for Speed Golf (running golf). Later this year, I am putting on the first ever Speed Golf World Championship,” said Larson.
Besides coaching, Larson is also very involved in bringing back speed golf. According to Larson’s speed golfing website, speed golf is a fast pace sport where golfers are scored based on the number of stokes and the time it takes to complete the course. Larson won the speed golfing event in just over 39 minutes with the score of 75. He now holds the record for speed golfing (speedgolfworldchampionship.com).
“Senior Daniel Jahng is our number one player. Junior Nick LaPaglia is number two and Junior Nick Hayworth is number three. All players are doing great and still improving,” said Larson.
“We are really lucky to have so many great golf players on our team. It really makes for a great experience to play golf with so many friends,” said Sherman.
