The UCHS Boys Basketball Team will be hosting the Worldwide Surf N’ Slam Basketball Tournament on December 27-30, during Winter Break, in the University City High School gym and Mission Bay High School gym. Both Boys and Girls Basketball Teams from all over the world will be flying into San Diego to compete in this tournament.
For the past 25 years, UCHS has been the host of this tournament. According to Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Terry Stonebreaker, in the past there have been teams from Australia, New York, Alaska and Florida in the tournament. Due to the economy, the tournament this year will be smaller than it has been in previous years.
“All the proceeds from the tournament go to the UCHS Boys Basketball Team. This tournament is important because it is a great fundraiser for us,” said Stonebreaker.
The UCHS Girls Basketball Team will not be participating in the Surf N’ Slam tournament this year. Upon deciding which tournaments in which they would participate, the Girls Basketball Team did not have enough space in their schedule for the Surf N’ Slam tournament.
According to the official Surf N’ Slam website, in previous years, teams had a day off from tournament playing to go to some of San Diego’s main attractions such as the Zoo or Sea World or even drive up to Disneyland. The same is planned for this year (basketballtravelers.com).
The tournament presents a unique opportunity for UCHS basketball. “This tournament will give our team a chance to be exposed to different talented teams from around the world,” said Stonebreaker.
According to Stonebreaker, both he and Brad Milhoan have been working together to organize this event.
