Senior Jordyn Merrill is one of the many lucky seniors who has been offered a scholarship to help pay for her college education.
Merrill has played soccer for a majority of her life. First starting off with club soccer, she later joined the UC High soccer team to further her experience in her favorite sport. This past August, Merrill was invited to a soccer camp at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where the soccer coaches observed and noted Merrill’s ability to play. Interested in having Merrill on their team, the school kept in contact and soon after offered Merrill a scholarship. Since the college is in the D2 division and cannot give students a full ride, the scholarship will cover her junior and senior years of college.
Merrill said, “After viewing the school, meeting the teammates, and seeing the housing, I really liked the college, especially with the fact that I share locker rooms with David Beckham and the LA Galaxy practices right next to us.”
Despite her talents for soccer, Merrill has relatively different plans for her career path. “I’ve decided I’m going to major in nursing, and become a nurse practitioner,” she explained. “I like helping people and I’m really interested in learning more about the human body.”
According to Merrill, she plans on playing soccer for her four years at Dominguez Hills, as the school wants her on the team because they firmly believe she will be a key player there. After, she plans on continuing it as a hobby. Regardless of the busy schedule Merrill will have, between soccer practice and her schooling, she looks forward to gaining the college experience. She said, “I am more than excited to attend this school. I can’t wait to start my own life, have a new experience away from home, and get to meet plenty of new people.”
Senior Mackenzie Forgey is a fellow soccer player with Merril and definitely agrees that she is one of the best players on the UC Varsity Soccer Team. “Jordyn is one of the best players on the team in a lot of different aspects,” Forgey explained. “It’s one thing to be really good at soccer, but it’s another to be able to lead a team. She’s an amazing role model for so many girls on the team. Her scholarship to Dominguez Hills is well deserved.”
