Fall Recipe: Caramel Bars

Kennedy Wilson, Editor-in-Chief

As the temperature starts to drop we are drawn to the oven to bake the best of fall treats. Here’s one of Journalism’s favorite fall treats that brings a little bit of joy to any potluck.

Ingredients:
11/2 cups of flour
1 1/2 cups of rolled oats
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups of brown sugar
1 cup of butter (melted)
1- 14 oz. bag of caramels
1/2 cup of half and half milk
1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the melted butter and stir well to coat all of the dry ingredients. Press half of the mixture onto the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan. Bake at 350 Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes (until lightly browned).
Meanwhile, melt the caramels and half and half in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth.
Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the crust with chocolate chips. Then pour the caramel mixture over the top.  Crumble the rest of the crust over everything and return it to the over for an additional 10-12 minutes (Caramel should be bubbling and the edges browning). Cool the bars completely before cutting.
