Do you want to be an astronaut or an actress? Maybe a director or a professional basketball player? Some of you might even consider teaching. At what point in our lives do we switch our dreams from having a glamorous vocation to a more practical one… or do we ever? Some continue along this path and follow their dreams to become the next big star, while others take the less risky route and allow money to influence their future job prospects. Everyone needs money to survive, but should people be so obsessed with money that it drives their lives forever?
Money is nice… would you agree? Jobs that pay better tend to be more desirable to some because of the lack of risk that comes involved with them. Everyone needs to pay for those very necessary iPhone and new shiny cars, but happiness is also an important thing. Others would like to provide for their families and not make their children sell fruit on the side of the road, while the parents are following their dreams of becoming professional unicyclists. Money is a necessity in life and unfortunately, without it, people could not provide for basic things.
Others believe that a job should be something a person looks forward to waking up to. Of course, most people don’t jump out of bed on Monday mornings racing to work, but generally liking one’s job is a bonus. This passion may lead people to more successful lives. Junior Corey Goldstein stated, “I would prefer doing something I am passionate about, because I would be able to become more successful, because I would enjoy what I would be doing. Also, being passionate about your job means you don’t have to work a day in your life.” You only get one life, so might as well enjoy it. Similarly Junior Lauren Sinnock stated, “As the daughter of a teacher, I have been shown it is not about choosing the most lucrative profession, but rather choosing a job that will bring you the most fulfillment.” Money is not everything and a life full of happiness will end up being more rewarding.
Sometimes people are able to find a job that allows them to support a family and not dread going to work every day. If the average person spends five days of the week working, then those should be spent doing something that makes you happy. Benjamin Franklin stated, “If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.” We should all remember to find a happy medium between passionate and practicality (oneweekjob.com).
Choosing one’s career can literally be a life-changing experience. With the increase of unemployment rates, many people are resorting to jobs that they are not passionate about. Being practical is not a horrible thing to ask for when searching for jobs. Not everyone is lucky enough to follow the dream of becoming an astronaut and some just need to find jobs ot simply pay rent. Money is an important factor to consider when deciding on a career but how much of a role should money play? I guess it depends.
