2016 is finally over and all I can say is wow. We started the year as juniors, and so much has happened since. There are only five more months until we seniors are out of here. I definitely feel that 2017 is going to be a way better year than 2016 was. Despite half of the nation’s fear of our new President, there’s so much to look forward to. I know that I am so much happier at this point in the year than I was at this point last year.
The main thing I am not looking forward to this year is the fact that I have to take PE second semester. Now can someone explain to me why I have to take PE when I already passed the FitnessGram, have taken more than a year of PE and have more physical activity at dance practice than I would in an actual PE class?
Dance Team has practice twice a week for two hours (sometimes three). Then we have two performances on Tuesdays at basketball games, and then two more performances each Friday. In addition to these performances, we have Pep rallies. This means we work three times as hard to make sure the dances for both basketball games and the pep rallies look good.
Then after basketball season is over, it’s recital season. Recital season means that not only am I going to the typical two practices a week, but now I have extra practices on Tuesday (and sometimes Wednesday) nights for the extra dances we perform. In addition to that, I often have to practice dances that are not for the Dance Team, such as solos.
If it sounds like I’m complaining about Dance Team practice, trust me, I’m not. I love Dance Team and I especially love recital season. However, that in tandem with seventh period P.E. sounds terrible. If you have extracurriculars that keep you active, you shouldn’t have to take P.E. after you’ve already passed the FitnessGram.
As if having to take P.E. a second time isn’t bad enough, we’re doing Sadies again this year too. Don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful time last year; But the reason everyone went all out and actually asked people was because Sadies usually only happens once every four years or so. Sure, my friends and I are still asking people, but it’s just what we’re supposed to do and it’s not as fun as last year. I’m not even sure I want to go this year, but even being a senior, I’m not sure I want to miss it. I’m not sure exactly how I feel other than confused about why we are breaking the tradition in the first place.
What do you think Sydney? Do you think breaking tradition is a good thing? And what about our school’s PE regulations?
