The annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will take place for two weekends in Indio, California this spring, weekend one being April 14 to 16 and weekend two from April 21 to 23.

According to the Coachella official website, this year’s headliners include Radiohead, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar. This year’s lineup also includes artists such as DJ Snake, Lorde, Travis Scott, the XX, Toots and the Maytals, Gucci Mane, and many, many others. Some of the lesser known artists such as Tacocat, Caveman, Allah-las, Denzel Curry, and Twin Peaks appear farther down on the lineup (coachella.com).

The 99,000 capacity festival sold out in just three hours, according to LA Weekly. However, this wasn’t the fastest in Coachella’s history, as in 2015 the festival sold out in just 40 minutes (LAWeekly.com).

Though many fans are excited to see this year’s headline performances, others are disappointed to hear that the Grammy Award winning artist, Beyoncé, is backing out of her headline performance. According to the USA Today official website, “The doctors have spoken, and Beyoncé is pulling out of her headlining slot at this year’s Coachella, due to concerns surrounding her pregnancy” (usatoday.com).

Freshman Darionna Darnel expressed her disappointment at the fact: “I’m sad that Beyonce won’t be performing this year.”

Beyonce was replaced by Lady Gaga. According to the USA Today website, “Gaga will join the Coachella’s other two headliners, Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar, for the two-weekend festival in Indio, Calif. on April 14-16 and April 21-23” (usatoday.com).

Along with Beyonce backing out of her headline performance, Goldenvoice (the company presenting Coachella), had to deal with the hacking of the Coachella website.

According to the Billboard Magazine official website, Goldenvoice has warned Coachella.com account holders of a potentially large data breach. In a message sent to users on Tuesday, the concert promoter said it recently discovered that hackers gained access to personal information, including full names, email addresses, phone numbers and birth dates provided to Coachella by festival-goers using the website (billboard.com).

Organizers stressed that no user passwords were stolen in the security breach, and that all “unauthorized third parties” have been blocked from further access. The hack was reported to authorities and is currently under investigation (billboard.com).

Coachella is not only a music festival, as there are additional activities to be done at the festival. According to the Coachella website, “From delicious food to world class art, Coachella offers numerous experiences to enjoy along with the music” (coachella.com).

According to the Coachella website, there are plenty of food options at the event. “Coachella offers more delicious food than you could eat in a single weekend, with over 100 vendors serving everything from wood-fired pizza and hand-crafted burgers to authentic street tacos and fresh-from-the-wok pad thai” (coachella.com).

Also according to the Coachella website, “Each year, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival commissions a number of original, large-scale art installations for display throughout the festival site and campgrounds. Carefully curated from submissions by dozens of established and up-and-coming artists, these works are an essential element of the Coachella experience. The key ingredient to these multi-media works is interactivity: it’s art that’s amorphous, shape-shifting, and responsive to its environment for an ever-shifting audience viewing from an infinite variety of perspectives” (coachella.com).

Darnel expressed, “I feel that Coachella promotes culture because Coachella is a culture within itself. I feel as if it highlights music rather than art because the main focuses of the festival are the concerts.”
