This year, 19 students from UC High’s band, orchestra, or choir have been selected to participate in the county-wide Honor Band and Orchestra, and Honor Choir, joining other students from around the county in upcoming Honors concerts.
According to the UC High Music website, the Honors Orchestra and Band students will participate in the SDUSD Honor Band and Orchestra Concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, at Copley Symphony Hall. Admission is free to everyone (uchsmusic.com).
Also, the Honors Choir students will perform at the CMEA-SBS Honor Choir Concert at 7 p.m. on March 3, at Point Loma Nazarene University’s Brown Chapel. Tickets to the event cost $2 (uchsmusic.com).
This year marks the record for the highest number of students from UC High participating in the honors performances. Students from all throughout the school district had the opportunity to audition to take part in the experience (uchsmusic.com).
Senior Erin Nicole Vedar is one of the 19 students selected from UC High. She is a part of the Honors Orchestra, which combines string players and certain players from the band to make a symphony orchestra. She said, “I look forward to meeting all of the amazing performers who were chosen and making out-of-this-world music with them. It’s an incredible opportunity to improve my own playing and make some great friends. I’ve done this since freshman year, and it’s always different, as there are always new conductors, music, and players that bring a new spirit. I’m just excited to have made it.”
Music Director Cameron Brown will be participating as one of the band managers this year and is looking forward to having all of his students’ hard work pay off. “I am the SDUSD Honor Band Manager this year, a prestigious leadership role amongst music directors in our district,” he explained. “And so I’m looking forward to every minute of it, and also the relief that comes when it’s all over. The performance is always one of my favorite events of the year.”
Senior Roxanne Galibut will be performing alongside her fellow band members, this being her third time making the ensemble during her high school career. She is excited to interact with different musicians that have gathered for the same purpose. “It’s always a great experience getting to know other musicians around the district and, moreover, knowing that these groups of kids are about as dedicated and serious about their musicianship as it gets,” she said. “It’s cool being able to play alongside people that understand where you come from when you say ‘I love to play music.’”
